Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) is the widely commemorated Mexican holiday celebrated in honor of the Mexican army's victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1867. While properly a Mexican celebration, it has become increasingly popular in the U.S., especially in areas bordering Mexico. The festive spirit of the day is observed with food, folkloric dancing, music and parades.
